COME AND SEE! VOCATION DISCERNMENT WEEK
The Place | St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, Colorado
The Dates | Monday, July 22 to Friday, July 26, 2019
Who Is Invited? | The week offers the opportunity to share the unique experience of monastic life in the silence and solitude of the Rocky Mountains. It is specifically oriented towards young Roman Catholic men ages 20-45 who are seriously discerning a vocation to the monastic life.
Do you I Have to be a Roman Catholic? | Yes. You must have received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist; be unmarried, or if married previously granted a decree of nullity by the Church.
What Does It Cost? | Nothing. You will be our guest. Arrival and departure transportation is your only responsibility.
Where Are We & How Do You Get There? | The closest airport to us is Aspen ½ hour away. Daily flights to Aspen from Denver and from most major cities are available. Van and bus service is available from Denver International Airport. Glenwood Springs is served by Amtrak. Driving time from Denver is approximately 3 ½ hours on I-70 exiting at Glenwood Springs and following CO 82 to the Old Snowmass exit.
What Should I Bring? | Every day is casual!
FOR INDOOR ACTIVITIES | Comfortable clothing—jeans, T-shirts, short and long pants, sandals
FOR WORK | HIKING | WALKING | Long-sleeve shirt for sun and UV protection, light-weight rain jacket, sweater or puffy, sunscreen, boots or trail runners, water bottle, visor cap, sunglasses
What Should I Not Bring? | Take a “tech break”! Because of the absence of relays in the area, cell phones do not work and neither the hermitages nor the retreat house has Wi-Fi reception. A land line is available at the monastery.
Where Will I Stay? | You will have individual accommodations in one of our retreat house hermitages with towels, bedding, alarm clocks, flashlights provided. Each hermitage is fully equipped with bath/kitchen facilities and adequately provisioned with food for your preparation of breakfast and the evening meal. Every day you will join the community for the noon meal in the monastery. In accordance with the Rule of Benedict, meals are without meat.
A Brief Description of the Week | During the mornings you will join the brothers in the daily rhythm of prayer and work in the monastery and on the ranch. In the afternoons there will be conferences/group discussions and the opportunity to meet with the brothers in the monastic community and adequate time to hike and enjoy the natural beauty, silence and solitude of our 3000 acres. Full participation in the daily monastic schedule will provide space for individual prayer and meditation.
